Destination Monywa has been brought into the tourism spotlight by its spectacular sights - made all the more appealing by their riveting stories of yore. Two of the most prominent are the Reclining Buddha and the Standing Buddha, towering statues depicting Lord Buddha looking kindly over Monywa's environs from atop a hill. The former being the largest Buddha statute in the world and the latter the second tallest of its kind, you can spot them from several miles away. That long-distance view won't prepare you for arrival at the foot of the Buddhas; you will be looking up and you will still be awe-struck.
One of the most amazing buddhist temples in the world, the Monyin Sambuddhe Temple Complex has over 800 brightly painted stupas around it. There are also reportedly 582,357 Buddha statues on the ceiling, walls, archways and in niches in and around the temple.
It looks like an inland sea in the dry zone - a strange natural phenomenon. It's one of a couple of crator lakes found near Monywa. The lakes are known for their beautiful scenery, rare bird species and spirulina found in the mineral-rich water there.
